The land ethic at the turn of the millennium

Aldo Leopold's land ethic has proved more complex and subtle than he envisioned. Nevertheless, Leopold launched what, facing a new millennium, has proved urgent on the global agenda: an environmental ethics concerned in theory and practice about appropriate respect for values carried by the natural world and human responsibilities for the sustaining of these values. A blending of anthropocentric and biocentric values continues to be vital. These duties toward nature involve analysis of ecosystem integrity and evolutionary dynamism at both scientific and philosophical levels; any responsible environmental policy must be based on plausible accounts of ecosystems and a sustainable biosphere. Humans and this planet have entwined destinies. We now envision an Earth ethic beyond the land ethic.     

A NEW GENUS AND TWO NEW SPECIES OF CATANTOPIDAE FROM HUNAN PROVINCE, CHINA (ORTHOPTERA: ACRIDOIDEA)

Abstract Two new species of the grasshopper family Catantopidae were discovered from the Mangshan National Natural Reserve at the southern tip of Hunan Province. One of them constitutes a new genus, Yiniu , which is close to Oxya Audinet-Serville. They are described as below.     

Sievoides kocyigiti n. gen., n. sp., Mesoendothyra altineriana n. sp. and Kurnubia feleensis n. sp. from Kimmeridgian shallow water limestones intercalated with alkaline igneous rocks, Western Taurus, Turkey

In the framework of the palaeogeographical reconstruction of the Western Taurus during Jurassic, the study of northern and eastern boundary of the Taurids started. Detailed facies analysis evidenced the position of the Barla Dag ramp between two elevated areas: the southern rimmed shelf extension of the platform system and the northern neritic-beach-land plain. In the basal biostratigraphical and ecological characteristics of the Balcikhisar volcano-sedimentary sequence, correlated with the Fele outcrop, one genus and three new species of foraminifers have been found: Sievoides kocyigiti n. gen., n. sp. and Mesoendothyra altineriana n. sp. from neritic environment, and Kurnubia feleensis n. sp. from rimmed shelf lagoon. Both carbonate sedimentary deposits are intercalated with spilitic-basalt pillow lava flows. The age of the new three species is Kimmeridgian, controlled by some foraminifer golden hooks.     

Morphogenia: a new genus of the Neotropical tribe Jubini (Coleoptera,Staphylinidae, Pselaphinae) from the Brazilian Amazon

A new genus and species of the large Neotropical pselaphine tribe Jubini is described from Manaus, Brazil, based on material preserved in the Natural History Museum, London. Morphogenia struhli gen. et sp. n. represents the possible sister taxon of the abundant and speciose genus Barrojuba Park, sharing with it the putatively derived condition of anterolaterally shifted vertexal foveae, producing a smoothly convex vertex devoid of fovea or sulci. However, unlike Barrojuba, Morphogenia retains a plesiomorphic antebasal sulcus on the pronotum in both sexes, and additionally lacks elaborate abdominal fovea-like pockets and teeth on the lateral margins of the pronotum that are typical of Barrojuba. The genus is also unusual among jubine genera in lacking the characteristic V- or Y-shaped gular carina. In contrast to the commonly-collected Barrojuba, specimens of Morphogenia are absent in extensive jubine collections housed in museums in the United States, indicating that the new taxon may be relatively scarce or localised.     

New Aradidae from Ecuador (Hemiptera,Heteroptera, Aradidae)

As an addition to the presently poorly known aradid fauna of Ecuador, 3 new genera and 4 new species are described: Osellaptera setifera gen. n., sp. n.; Kormilevia ecuadoriana sp. n. both belonging to Mezirinae; and Carventinae Cotopaxicoris cruciatus gen. n., sp. n. and Onorecoris piceus gen. n., sp. n. An updated key is provided for all species of the Neotropical genus Kormilevia Usinger & Matsuda, 1959.     

Tabanidae (Diptera) of Amaz?nia XXI. Descriptions of Elephantotus gen. n. and E. tracuateuensis sp. n. (Diachlorini) from the Brazilian coast

Elephantotus, a new genus of Tabanidae from the Amazon coast, Brazil, is described based on a new species E. tracuateuensis. Five females were collected in Pará State, and a male in Maranhão State. Arguments are presented for separating the new genus from Dasybasis, as well as the possibility of its occurrence being related to the nesting sites of coastal birds. The new species is characterized by its large size (x = 2.15 cm, n = 5 females), glabrous eyes, reddish-brown tegument, light brown frontal callus not touching the edges of the eyes, extending up to the vertex that has traces of ocelli, basal plate of the antennal flagellum with obtuse angle, without a tooth or spine, wings hyaline, with brown basal cells, without appendix in the fork of vein R₄₊₅, and genital furca wide with extended flaps.     

Titimbera,a new genus of Orthocladiinae from South and Central America (Diptera: Chironomidae)

Titimbera n. gen. is erected based on the males of three new species from South and Central America: T. amazonica n. sp. from the Amazon region, Brazil; T. titi n. sp. from Venezuela and T. laselvensis n. sp. from Costa Rica. The combination of bare eyes and wing membrane; antenna without strong apical seta; scalpellate acrostichals in mid scutum; costa strongly extended; R₄₊₅ ending opposite to M₃₊₄; Cu₁ strongly curved to slightly sinuous; anal point sitting high on tergite IX, nearly parallel-sided with bluntly rounded apex; and club-shaped to subtriangular gonostylus with distinct heel will separate the genus from all other orthoclads.     

Praealbonemertes whangateaunienses n. gen. and n. sp., a new heteronemertean from New Zealand

Abstract

A new genus and species of heteronemertean, Praealbonemertes whangateaunienses n. gen. and n. sp., is described and illustrated. The species is characterised by inter alia a cephalic lacuna with strands of longitudinal muscle fibres, a proboscis with three muscle layers, and a well-developed muscle plate dorsal to the foregut and anterior intestine. The material was collected in New Zealand.

中国陕西铜川中三叠世新直脉蝎蛉科一新属一新种(昆虫纲,长翅目)

记述新直脉蝎蛉科1新属1新种Neorthophlebopsis qishuiheensis gen.et sp.nov.,并以其Sc很长,Rs与M分支同一水平,Rs1 2分支在Pt之前,M与CuA汇合,臀区3支粗壮横脉,呈一字斜形排列等特征与已知属相区别.新属种系铜川昆虫组合的新成员,属陕西昆虫群.化石标本采自陕西铜川中三叠统铜川组下段上部灰绿色泥页岩.铜川组的时代相当欧洲拉丁尼期(Ladinian Stage).
